Previously, I blogged about my 3 Steps to Acne Clear Skin and the response was great. 2 years down the road, it’s time for me to write an updated version. I want to share with you further insights on what I have learnt to maintain acne clear skin😉
My Acne Story
I have been through the darkest period of my life plagued with adult acne. This is the reason for my passion and vigour to share about my journey and insights. It’s definitely not fun to have acne – in fact it was humiliating. People asking me if I have washed my face to keep it clean.. Others offering me different products to try and stuff like that…
Through this journey, I learnt that not all advice offered by dermatologists are helpful. For my case, they proved to be useless and exorbitant. Dermatologists usually advice against going for facial extractions. However, it was otherwise for myself. I did my facial treatments with Glomax Aesthetics and that helped unclog my pores. I also weaned myself off the synthetic chemicals in my daily products. I’m currently using plant-based products infused with essential oils.
Tip 1 for Acne Clear Skin: Gut Health
Do you know that most skin conditions may be related to a damaged gut? Gut inflammation can cause increased “leaking” of certain proteins out into the body. This in turn can irritate the skin, and cause conditions such as eczema.
Many members in my oily community visits a naturopath to heal their skin issues naturally. Unlike western doctors who target at treating the symptoms, naturopaths take a more holistic approach. They will assess your condition by looking at your blood test report. After which, they will recommend different herbal supplements to support your health naturally. They will also advice on the diet changes necessary (i.e. cut gluten, sugar, dairy etc) for gut health.
You can consider visiting a naturopath if you are struggling with long-term health issues 😉
One naturopath that my friends recommend is Dr. Sundardas – you may schedule an appointment with him at his clinic with your blood test report accordingly.
Some plant-based supplements that I’ve been taking to support healthy gut would be:
- Ningxia Red (yes, my favourite “red juice” for energy boost and antioxidants)
- Sulfurzyme (for healthy skin, hair & nails)
- Life 9 probiotics
(and all of them are from Young Living because it’s the brand that I trust).
Tip 2: Emotions
Yes, emotions might affect your overall health as well. Stress can promote the growth of cancer cells, it can also induce chronic illnesses and skin issues. Hence it is important that we ensure that we have a positive outlook towards life.
I quit my full-time job in the finance industry 3 years back due to the stress that I was facing. I believe it helps with clearing my skin fast. However, if you are unable to change your jobs, then you might need to explore ways to cope with stress. Getting help such as counselling might be a great alternative. Or, you can adopt healthy habits & hobbies such as exercising or painting to help cope with negative emotions.
I personally find that essential oils are a great way to support emotions.

Tip 3: Hormones
Hormones can be the cause of breakouts as well. Especially for those acne breakouts that appear at the chin area during the premenstrual period.
I have been using some essential oil blends to support healthy hormones and manage my premenstrual mood swings as well. Some blends that I use on a regular basis would be the Progessence Phyto Plus and Dragon Time. For guys, you can explore using Shutran to support your male hormones too.
Tip 4: Clean Skincare & Makeup
Through my acne journey, I realised that my skin reacts adversely to skin products that are laden with synthetic chemicals. Especially ingredients such as SLS, parabens and fragrances. You can learn how to label read the ingredients on your skincare products and scan them through the EWG Skin Deep website.
I have weaned synthetics off all my products and replaced them with some of my DIY Skincare products that are infused with essential oils.
You may read about my skincare regimen over here.
If you find it too troublesome to make your own skincare products, you can get them from Young Living. Some stuff that I’ve tried and would highly recommend are:
- ART Gentle Cleanser (it’s a light foaming face wash for most skin types)
- Orange Blossoms Face Wash (for oily, combination skin)
- Satin Mint Face Scrub (it’s a super gentle face scrub used to exfoliate the skin)
- Mineral Sunscreen SPF50++
- Mirah Face Cleansing Oil (makeup remover)
- Seedlings Baby Wipes (yes, I use this to remove makeup on lazy days)
- Lavender Lip Balm (this softens and repairs chapped lips like magic!)
- Savvy Minerals Makeup Line
Tip 5: Healthy Lifestyle
Having clear skin is not about just slathering a bunch of “stuff” onto the skin. It’s about holistic wellness so that our skin can literally glow from within!
Hence having a healthy lifestyle and balanced diet plays a part too! This means sleeping early (before 11pm), exercising, having a balanced diet etc etc.
If you are struggling to sleep, you can consider taking supplements such as SleepEssence. It helps give you a good night’s rest by increasing melatonin levels at night.
I’m done with my sharing my insights on obtaining acne clear skin. I hope that it is helpful for you because this was what I went through. Just know that it’s totally possible to get out of this.
