Mom Applied Vicks VapoRub to her Baby & he died shortly…
Do you instinctively reach out for the Vicks VapoRub whenever you are suffering from nasal congestion?
Since young, we have been taught by commercials, parents and even doctors that the best remedy for flu and cold is Vicks VapoRub. It seemed effective in making us feel more refreshed with the cooling effect but it is not safe to be used on children. Moreover, there are several long-term damage and side effects of using this product.
It does nothing to relieve congestion…
Doctors at Wake Forest University started conducting a study after treating an 18-month-old girl who developed severe respiratory distress after Vicks VapoRub had been applied directly under her nose to relieve cold symptoms. They concluded that the product does nothing to relieve the congestion (in fact, it increased mucus production by up to 59% & the ability to clear mucus was reduced by 39%) and that a tiny amount of it can cause inflammation and irritation in children.
It causes irritation even when a tiny amount is applied
Dr. Bruce Rubin is the co-author of a study published in the journal Chest that says some babies or toddlers may experience respiratory distress from using VapoRub under the nose. In a press release, he commented:
“The ingredients in Vicks can be irritants, causing the body to produce more mucus to protect the airway. And since infants and young children have airways that are much narrower than those of an adult, any increase in mucus or swelling can narrow them severely.”
In addition, the label states that it is not to be used in any way for children under 2 years old. The BabyRub formula can be used on babies 3 months and older, but it also specifically states not to use it on the face or in the nostrils.
It might cause cancer
Vicks VapoRub may cause breast cancer if overused as the main ingredient is Petroleum. According to the Environmental Working Group (EWG), many of the cosmetic industry’s chemical safety assessments reveal those common petroleum-based ingredients can be contaminated with a cancer-causing impurity called 1,4-dioxane. Studies have shown that this chemical penetrates the skin and is classified as a probable human carcinogen by the EPA and also a known animal carcinogen by the National Toxicology Program. Although companies can easily remove this impurity during the manufacturing process, tests documenting its common presence in products show that they often don’t get removed completely, leaving the end-consumers at risk for potential chronic and widespread exposures.
